The Birthday Gemstones

As a passionate collector and lover of jewelry, the particular gemstones that are associated with each month of the year, the birthstones that correlate with a girl’s birthday especially interest me! The stones have qualities and meanings that symbolize the birth month with meanings and folklore that date back to ancient times.

Some believe that wearing your birthstone during your birth month gives heightened powers; they are your special lucky gems. Some also believe that wearing a birthstone that is not associated with your birth month is unlucky, this folklore is especially true of opals.

January is Garnet

symbolizes faith and truth, provides strength, comes from Latin word for pomegranate, a gemstone of protection

February is Amethyst

said to strengthen relationships, gives the wearer courage, at one time was reserved for royalty, the Greek word means sober

March is Aquamarine

brings peace and serenity, the name is a derivative of a Latin word for sea water, an early talisman for sailors

April is Diamond

the ultimate symbol of romance and everlasting love, from Greek word adamus meaning unconquerable

May is Emerald

associated with fertility, rebirth and love, said to be the favored stone of the Roman goddess Venus

June is Pearl

symbol of purity, one of the most feminine and elegant gemstones, folklore says pearls were the hardened tears of Aphrodite, the goddess of love

July is Ruby

signifies love and passion and protects wearer from evil, folklore says a flame burns from within the gemstone

August is Peridot

symbolizes strength, an aid to friendship, and was said to be favored by pirates

September is Sapphire

guards against evil, said to become dull if worn by a wicked person, sapphire was the engagement ring or Princess Diana

October is Opal

was said to have magical powers due to the flash of colors, opal symbolized hope, faithfulness and confidence.

November is Topaz

said to drive away sadness, strengthen intellect and bestow courage, the name topaz comes from the Sanskrit and meaning fire

December is Turquoise

a love charm of good fortune and success, believed to promote good fortune, happiness, and long life

It is interesting and entertaining to learn information regarding birthstones. Gems can not only embellish jewelry but collectibles as well, such as compacts and vanity items. My birthstone is the diamond, known as the girl’s best friend, lucky me! Since I am a hopeless romantic, the gemstone's qualities fit me and my personality quite well!

Wishing you all birthday joy on your special day this year! If you are looking for a memento to celebrate your birth month, look no further than the exciting shops on Ruby Lane.
