Vintage Collectibles

Postcards: More than Pretty Pictures

Nine years ago our family business fell into postcard collecting and dealing after attending a local estate auction. We went looking for glass or pottery and came home with 10,000 postcards.

Memories of Route 66

My grandparents lived 108 miles away from our home in Peoria, Illinois in the town of Kankakee. It was less than three hours away, but the early 1960s had no super highways, no hand-held video games, iPods, miniature DVD players, cell phones or lap top computers.

Reproduction: Mobil Gas Station Pump with Glass Top

Many reproduction gas pumps and globes used during all eras of the internal combustion engine transportation era can be purchased new today. The example shown here is a fantasy that looks like a circa 1950 "8 Ball" Electric Gas Pump from the Wayne Pump Co.

Rock Music Trivia: Led Zeppelin

It was a great trivia question and one I should have known the answer to. What super long Led Zeppelin song was the most requested song in the 1970s on FM radio stations in the United States but was never officially released as a single? All eyes at the table turned to me, the Oldies expert and record collector, but this was one I didn’t know.

A Message from Ruby Lane CEO Tom Johnson: Ruby Lane Turns 15!

It's a very special year for Ruby Lane – it's our 15th birthday! Needless to say, we at Ruby Lane, are proud to reach this grand milestone. While over the years many Internet businesses have come and gone, Ruby Lane remains as strong as ever. I recall that when we first launched the site, e-commerce was a new word and a relatively new concept. It's exciting to experience first hand how much things have evolved.

Memory Lane Patti Page

This month we lost one of the music world’s great icons, Patti Page. She rose to fame in the late 1940s and her popularity lasted through the mid 1970s. She was the best selling female artist of the 50s, selling over 100 million records. Her pop music style blended into country music so her hits often made the Country Music Charts. Her signature song Tennessee Waltz, recorded in 1950, is a good example of this.

Vintage Hats: Get That Perfect Fit

As vintage hats become more and more popular, different and unique styles/shapes are being found online. Hats are basically sized in inches only with style being a major factor. Some older styles will have a size tag which usually runs 21, 22, and 23. Almost always when measured they will be an inch smaller. Measurements are taken on the inside around the sweatband and your head needs to be measured exactly where the sweatband will run.
