Grapenut Glass: The Great Experiment Part 2

Obviously, I have done something wrong. After all my planning, here it is 3 hours into the sale and the only items sold have been two Fire King casseroles, to my Mother. I’ve seen almost no traffic; had four sets of browsers, all of which looked but commented under their breath (they thought) that the prices were too high. So what went wrong?? Not good enough advertising? Possibly. I hung signs in town and put an ad in the local paper and Craigslist.

Mainely Glass: Oops! Turning an Oversight into an Opportunity

Mistakes happen. It is how one handles that mistake that makes the difference between good sellers and bad sellers. Sometimes a mistake is a good thing. I collect, buy and sell glass. Sometimes other things, but primarily glass. Unless it is new in the original box, there is likely to be some wear, scratches, stains, rough spots, tiny chips, etc. I expect older glass to have a few flaws, but I also expect those flaws to be disclosed.

Max's Three Rivers Finds: Do I Sell or Keep It?

Do I Sell or Keep It?

The auction is over and that excitement is transferred to the items I bought, which can lead to a tough decision. Sell or keep?

Do I keep the special item I’ve been looking for, for years, or sell it? Or do I keep the unique cool piece and start a new colleciton!

So I start to unpack my auction wins with anticipation of what I should do. I will carefully unwrap the items and place them on a shelf.

Cinsababe's: A Thanksgiving Collection

I remember as a child anxiously awaiting the arrival of the latest Ideals. Ideals, for those who never had the pleasure, was a sort of magazine, sort of gift book publication with beautiful photography and full color art interspersed with poems, stories, quotes, recipes, and reader contributions for every holiday and season throughout the year.

Suzan's Treasures: Flower of the Month - Sunflower

Days are becoming shorter, and the fields and woods around us glow with amber and scarlet. Here in Maryland, the golden sunflowers are full and ripe with seeds, giving us food for wildlife and a few last of the season cut flowers.

Venti Vintage: I've Got Your Number - Helpful Hints for Dating Your Collectibles

When I first starting handling antiques with my husband in December of 1959, I must say he was more of a historian than I was. Through the years, however, I have learned many helpful hints to correctly identify and date merchandise. Here are but a few. If the article is of interest, there are plenty more where these came from!

Catisfaction's Glass Gallery: Giving Collectibles as Gifts

I am sure I can say, with some accuracy, that everybody has someone on their gift list that collects something; whether it be a particular Glass or China pattern, a favorite color or animal, or some memorabilia of a long past piece of history. Sometimes the collectors on ones gift list can be easy to shop for, especially if you live in the same house or share an interest.

Alley Cats Vintage: Loretta Young - Star of the Silver Screen

For me Loretta Young had a magical appeal. She was one of my all time favorite stars of the silver screen era. If you don't know Loretta Young then shame on you.

She was born Gretchen Young in Salt Lake City in 1913 moving to Hollywood in 1916 when she starting appearing in films at the age of 3. Her career continued as did her fame. In 1947 she won an Oscar for The Farmer's Daughter. Every holiday season you can see her in The Bishop's Wife with Cary Grant and David Niven.

From 1953 to 1961 she hosted the Loretta Young Show. This is where she came into my life. Her trademark appearance at the beginning of each show introduction was to appear in a new high fashion evening gown each week. Sadly these shows will never be seen because she made it a legal stipulation in her contract that they not be rerun. Always fashion conscious she didn't want to be seen in outdated clothing...if only she knew how her appearance on these shows would be so admired today by vintage clothing collectors.

Cindy's Collectibles: Japanese Collectibles

My fascination with “Occupied Japan” collectibles was piqued one day while accompanying a friend to a local flea market. While browsing, I happened upon some small children porcelain figurines marked Occupied Japan. Upon arriving home I began researching the term “Occupied Japan.” I discovered that items with this marking were made at the end of World War II between the time period of 1945 until 1952 when Japan was once again considered an independent state.
