Sheffield Silver Candlesticks: Light on Some Shady Business of the Past

A certain misapprehension has always surrounded the subject of silver from Sheffield. Popular belief holds that it is the same as Sheffield plate. This belief is justified up to a point, for there certainly was an interlocking of interests between silver from Sheffield and Sheffield plate, as the story of the Sheffield candlestick shows.

What's This? A Piano Baby

Could you help me to identify the factory that has made this charming  Piano Baby? On the bottom it is marked with an "H" or an "I". I inherited the piece from my grandmother so I'm sure that is not a replica. I would be grateful if you could indicate me its provenience / production and indication of some bibliographic reference.

Sincerely yours,

Luís Montalvão

What's This? Question from Kansas

I purchased a lighting fixture this weekend at an estate sale and I’m sure it’s an outdoor fixture. I believe it’s an Arts and Crafts design and made of iron and glass. It’s in perfect condition, minus one glass panel that was replaced with a clear glass panel vs. the textured. There are no stamps/names/numbers anywhere on it, but it’s definitely old.

The dimensions are:

Base: 8 x 8 inches

In this section, we will look into several practices available to Collectors and Dealers to appraise their items, starting with the formal or official Appraisal and then describing several other methods that cost very little and are usually faster.

APPRAISALS & ANTIQUES VALUES: Part I - Some Definitions

According to Webster’s College Dictionary, an Appraisal is “(a) The act of estimating or judging the nature or value of something or someone, (b) a valuation, as for sale or taxation, (c) an estimate or considered opinion.”

ROLLED SHEFFIELD SILVER PLATE: What it is and how it began

It was about 1743 when Thomas Boulsover discovered that an ingot of copper could be given a coating of silver by means of fusion by heat, and that the two metals united could be worked into shape as one. Most importantly, the copper always retained its silver covering, however thinly it was rolled. At first, Boulsover used plated copper for making buttons, boxes and other small wares.
