Island Vintage Jewelry: Collecting Vintage Jewelry

So you have been rolling around the idea of starting your own collection of vintage jewelry and why wouldn't you. The choices and options are practically limitless and just browse through any lady's magazine, everything vintage including jewelry is fashionable again!

Only a few years back, collecting was done by luck and by chance with most searching limited to local auctions, flea markets and yard sales. With the addition of online shopping, you can now shop far and wide and nearly anywhere in the world all the while sitting in the comfort of your own home.

There has never been a better time to start a vintage jewelry collection. After all, there is only so much pre 1970's jewelry to go around and once it has been snapped up by other collectors, it's gone making this hobby an investment and let's face it, who isn't drawn to the glitter and bling that jewelry offers. A collection that not only increases in value but one you can wear? What more could a gal ask for!!

Ready to take the plunge? If you are, the next step is research! If you don't want to invest  your collection dollars in to the countless jewelry books available, take a much needed break and choose a store that offers in-house reading lounges. You can sit back, make any notes you want while browsing through  the books on their shelves at no cost. You will learn about jewelry from different time periods and made from different materials. Maybe you prefer genuine gold and gemstones, maybe you prefer the glitter of rhinestones, maybe you prefer a specific era or designer, maybe you would like to collect from several categories. There are so many options and designs to choose from!

Once you have narrowed down your favorites, consider the dollars you have available and spend them wisely. There are so many overseas reproductions hitting the market, make sure you are buying from reputable sellers in your area or well established online sellers (like those on Ruby Lane!). Ask questions and don't take anything for granted. Whether you are buying genuine or costume ask about condition. Is there wear to the plating? Are the back pins, ear clips, or screw backs in good working order? When buying rhinestones or genuine gemstones, ask if any are chipped, scratched or replaced. Don't forget to make sure the item has been stamped for gold, silver or platinum content or been properly tested to be genuine by a qualified jeweler if it is unstamped (make sure the stones are genuine too!)

Invest in a small folding magnifier, 10X should be fine and keep it in your purse so you can access it anytime. If you have the option of examining the piece in person before buying, take your time and check it thoroughly. Condition is so important when valuing a piece of jewelry.

As you become more and more familiar with the pieces you are collecting, it will become much easier to spot a good deal and jewelry that will continue to increase in value. My advice would be to buy only what you love, so take the plunge and most importantly HAVE FUN!!!!!
