This is a true Thanksgiving story from about 40 years ago

Everything glittered with last night's snow as we arrived in the tiny town where our in-laws were treating the family to Thanksgiving dinner.

Smells of turkey, pumpkin pie, and sweet potatoes enveloped us us at the front door. In the dining room, a huge oval table gleamed with silver and crystal. Candles and flowers shared space with deserts and family photos on the buffet.

Seated around the table, we waited . Through the door to the kitchen, we could see a huge brown and golden turkey "resting" on the stove for carving. Mogen David wine was passed while blessings were expressed.

From the kitchen, a high pitched scream. Parents, elders, toddlers and teenagers all rushed to the door, but the two family cats continued to eat turkey, never even looking up. After shooing the cats, our hostess asked that we take our seats at the dinner table again.

With grumbling stomachs, we wondered what would happen next. Finally, through the door came our smiling hostess with the turkey on a large platter. The bird was missing a leg, wing and a few other body parts, but what else was there to do? It was Thanksgiving. We let the eating began.
