Know No Boundaries

“Whenever you are offered a new opportunity, just say yes and then figure out how to do it. Remember that you have to want it more than you are afraid of it. The biggest boundaries that we face in our lives are very often the ones that we create ourselves in our minds. The boundaries of our achievement are primarily self-imposed. I say to you, look inside yourself to find the personal courage to explore and expand your horizons. Hold on strong to your positive attitude and optimism. Try to do something that you love and then get someone to pay you for it. Find that way in which you can make a difference in this world of ours, and the success will follow. Each one of us can make a difference.”

Excerpt of TV journalist Joan Lunden’s keynote address at the 175th Commencement of Lafayette College 2010

The rain clouds were thickening in the May sky, but I focused intently on the message of Joan Lunden’s interesting speech, patiently waiting for the moment when my bright daughter would walk across the stage to receive her diploma. A science wiz since elementary school, she was receiving a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from Lafayette College and this small college had made a huge difference in her life. She would be a first generation college graduate and with an engineering degree no less! It was truly one of the proudest moments of my life, a cherished milestone to celebrate. It was a day I thoroughly enjoyed and will remember always.

The advice relayed by Ms. Lunden that day struck a chord…never say “no” to a chance no matter how small or how much you may not want to take that leap of faith. Think back…has an opportunity presented itself that altered your life? I know for me this statement rings true in so many ways. And, fortunately, for my college graduate, a great job opportunity came to which she said yes and she’s pioneering work that will impact the future.

This May and June, millions of young people will graduate from both high school and college… with goals and dreams ahead and elated family members cheering them on. As the wonderful young leaders of tomorrow embark on new adventures, may they remember to explore, be courageous, keep positive and find what they love and do it! Congratulations and best wishes to the class of 2011!

Remember, Ruby Lane is a great place to honor your new graduate with a memento symbolizing your pride in their achievements. Stroll the Lane to find the perfect gift for that special grad!
