May the Month of MaryMay 15, 2012 - 6:29am
My first experience with a May Crowning was when my son was in kindergarten, he was chosen amongst his classmates to carry to the altar, the crown that would adorn the Blessed Virgin Mary statue. He was adorable, decked out in his miniature suit, his face beaming, and I remember the moment just like it was yesterday! The service was beautiful, the altar decorated like a lovely flower garden. In retrospect, it was that event that introduced me to the wonderful and varied collectibles that venerate the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus.

GOING GREENMay 14, 2012 - 5:51amMy husband and I had a lovely home in a suburb which boasted lovely trees and gardens. One day while observing the garden, we realized that we didn't have many birds and our neighbors seemed to be teeming with bird life. I decided there and then to go off to buy a bird bath which we duly put in the center of our lawn. We had a little stray cat that a friend had given us and much to our dismay, this animal proceeded to take out any brave bird that tried to settle on our bird bath. This was all too traumatic for us and our small children, so the cat was given back to the friend and I realized that some research was necessary. We joined our local Wildlife Society and received their monthly news letter informing us of all things wild. First lesson was the bird baths needed to be put in an area which affords them some protection(i.e. the bird bath needs some shrubbery around it) And, the second lesson was to plant native trees and plants, that belong in the area, which the birds and insects feed on
"Remake This Room on Ruby Lane" - High Gloss LibraryMay 11, 2012 - 8:05amDesigner Todd Klein used high gloss paint colors in this New York apartment. The library's high-gloss brown walls play up the grid pattern of the bookshelves, derived from a design by architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen. Pillows in Ixtapa by Jacques Bouvet et Cie make a handsome, well-worn chesterfield sofa look even more comfortable and inviting. Read More, here.

Rinker's Opinion - Will It Increase In Value?May 9, 2012 - 3:45pmNo one in the antiques and collectibles trade has a crystal ball. If a person tells you he/she does, he/she is lying. Even I am wrong on occasion when I project the long-term collectability and/or value of a collecting category. It is safer to invest in the stock market than in antiques and collectibles. The antiques and collectibles market is fickle, speculative, and manipulative. It takes a highly-skilled player, who knows when to get in and get out, to guarantee a sufficient return on investment.

What is a Metal Patina?May 9, 2012 - 4:24am
The term patina is used to describe jewelry which changes color after exposure to oxygen. This change is gradual with time, and can often be used to date items. People associate the term with sterling silver jewelry, but many other metals can be affected as well as silver. Many collectors like the aged look that patina gives a piece and like to have this patina intact. This is the reason that many sellers will not clean vintage jewelry. Others like to have that newly purchased, polished look, so they will remove the patina with various methods of cleaning.
Young Collectors and HappinessMay 8, 2012 - 7:42amFirst sale online I ever made was to someone who collected oyster tins. Over the years I have had customers who collected all sorts of things. Iris items, dolls, certain depression glass and china, buttons, vintage clothing etc. I once had a lady call and I had to ring a bell over the phone as she had to hear the tone first as a collector of bells. People collect unique items that possibly no one else does. It is what makes them happy. As a dealer most of my inventory are things I collected myself at one time or the other. It seems as one goes along I still find whole categories of antiques or vintage I did not even know about when I started.
Rinker's Opinion - Collecting Categories That Are No Longer Popular?May 7, 2012 - 11:32amCollecting categories die just as people do. Nothing lives forever. Contrary to what collectors believe, collecting categories have specific life spans, some of which are counted in centuries and others in decades. Collecting dates back to antiquity. Wealthy and influential Romans collected Greek statues and other artifacts. There would be little to pillage if people did not collect. |
